Year 2 2018 - 2019

Welcome to Year 2!

Welcome! My name is Mrs Walker and I will be teaching year 2 this year. My wonderful teaching assistant is Miss Cunningham and we can’t wait to share with you our learning journey.

We have been busy this year preparing for our Secret Agent Tasks (SATs) To become a secret agent we have had to complete some very important training – we need to be able to show skills in:

Maths – Using numbers in lots of different ways (good for breaking codes)

Maths – Use measure, shape and directions (excellent for fieldwork and investigating)

Reading – Be able to search for clues in texts (great for finding out what a secret message says)

We even have our very own special Lanyards which hold our identity badge. These have our fingerprint marks on but shhhhhhh it’s all a secret!

This year we have been learning about a variety of topics such as The Great Fire of London. We loved our visit from the Firemen and it was so much fun to squirt the hose and sit in the fire engine! As part of our Explorer’s topic we looked at the Moon and researched Neil Armstrong. At the moment we are looking at ‘Towers, Turrets and Tunnels’ and we have loved learning about Knights and Castles! In English we have used Zog to inspire us with our Dragon Stories!

In our class we love learning about R.E. We have a prayer table which has a special book where we can write our own prayers and use them at the end of each day. During worship time we have enjoyed using bubbles to blow our prayers into the sky and we like reflecting sat around some lit candles whilst listening to music! At the moment we are learning all about Thanksgiving. We have been reading the story of The Last Supper and learning about parts of the Mass. We even created our own Thank you song and performed it with instruments! We have then been thinking about ways that we thank others and we will be creating our own little thank you tree for a display.

A few reminders:

• Reading books are changed each Wednesday and spellings and homework will also be given on this day.
• Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school each week with all items of clothing clearly labelled.
• You can support us at home by working on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Have you tried Times Table Rockstars? Please also remember to encourage your child to read every day and sign their reading record; if you do then your child will receive Class Dojos and housepoints!
